In 1988, Richard J Stephenson, a finance entrepreneur, founded the Cancer Treatment Centers of America after experiencing a death in the family due to the illness. The organization was working out of 1 hospital at the time in Zion, Illinois. After the death of his mother, Stephenson realized that patients with cancer needed more specialized and personalized care in terms of cancer treatment. He opened his first center in the Midwestern Regional Medical Center, and later created 4 more centers across the United States. The hospitals are highly accredited and have received numerous awards including the Magnet Award, which is given to hospitals in recognition of great care.
